Mo’s Garage
Stories of Downtown
Mo’s Garage, owned by Maury Flunder
When visiting the businesses of Downtown Belleville, you get to take in the beautiful facades of the storefronts, discover unique local and international products, and dine on delicious food. You may catch a glimpse of the owner as they whiz by; the life of a small business owner is hectic—they want to engage with the customer, though they also must be the boss, the marketing expert, the cleaner, the server, the accountant, and that could all be before noon! We wanted to give those business owners an opportunity to slow down for a moment and share their story. Because behind each storefront are people who had a dream and put in a whole lot of work to make it come to life. These are some of the stories of Downtown Belleville.
Maury Flunder is not only a businessman, entrepreneur, and chair of the downtown belleville business improvement area. Beyond that, what you may not know is he possesses talented woodworking abilities! Behind the beautiful restored facade of Downtown Belleville lies a wonderful secret- a haven for wood workers and musicians alike. Mo’s Garage is a place where friends can gather and craft beautiful works of art or tinker away at a little project or two.
Back over 20 years ago when Maury became enamoured with Downtown Belleville, he acquired a building, the old firehall of Belleville and the very one that was later struck by the tornado in 2022. He has witnessed many changes in Downtown over the years but stays hopeful for the future. When the tornado hit and Chillango’s moved out of the Downtown that was hard to watch, but then after amazing renovations Law and Order’s Burgers was able to move in. “I have lived and worked in Downtown Belleville for over 20 years” said Maury “I have seen it grow and change. As Chair of the BIA I am hopeful and looking forward to the great future Downtown has and I am happy to be a part of it.”
At 404 Front Street right beside Law and Orders Burger, Maury and some of his talented friends practise the amazing art of guitar making together. When visiting the shop the team was shown some of the pieces made and the detail that goes into the craft. Maury is excited to share his shop with other creative minds that may be interested in guitar making. The group meets regularly to work together and share ideas. If you also share the passion of guitar making and are interested in joining Mo’s Garage check out their Facebook Group!
Of course before we left we asked our favourite question- what his favourite dining spots in the downtown area are! Maury will not be the first to tell you- Law and Orders Burger definitely takes the cake! It was a pleasure learning about Mo’s Garage and Maury’s role in making Downtown Belleville a vibrant and welcoming place. Keep following along for more Stories of Downtown!
