The Belleville Farmer’s Market
If you’re looking for an easy way to give back to the community or take the first steps towards shopping locally, try going to the Belleville Farmers Market. Local farmers, food producers, and artisans come together to offer fresh seasonal produce. Everything is picked on the day of or the night before the market day!
The Belleville Farmer’s Market not only provides locally sourced food and goods, but also a welcoming and comfortable environment to shop in. Vendors and customers alike benefit from the friendly social atmosphere. Buying directly from the person who made your goods provides you with the opportunity to ask questions that otherwise might not be answered. Wondering when certain crops are in season? How much sugar is in a jam? Or how items are processed for a sale? The Farmer’s Market features vendors that can help you with any concerns. You’ll be able to shop sustainably and be informed.
Items available at the Farmer’s Market include:
Seasonal fruits and vegetables
Microgreens
Unpasteurized honey
Mushrooms
Ecologically raised meat
Fresh baked goods and jams
Emu meat, oils, and soaps
Fresh cut flowers
Homemade artisan crafts
“You build up a great friendship with people at the market […] I don’t’ know that I could tell you all of their names, but I always knew their faces” – Arnold Vader
The Market is located in the Historic Market Square behind the City Hall in Downtown Belleville. It can be accessed on both sides from Front St. and Pinnacle St. The Market is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 8am to 5pm and operates year round, rain or shine.
Before going to the Belleville Farmers Market, be sure to bring reusable bags. Some vendors do carry bags, but in the spirit of sustainability, it might be a good idea to bring your own. All vendors accept cash so if you’re unsure of how to pay, bills and coins will always work. Some vendors also accept e-transfers, credit cards, and cheques. A list of current vendors is provided here, and you can check each vendor individually for when they will be at the market, the kinds of goods they provide, and how you can pay.
“It’s a friendly place, I think that’s part of it. I think a lot of customers come because they see their friends and neighbours” – Don Wilson
The Belleville Farmers Market has adapted COVID-safe protocols to make your shopping experience safe and comfortable. Sanitizer is on all vending tables, hand washing stations will be provided along the market, and there will be signs to guide traffic flow and maintain social distancing. If you’re looking to get involved or become a vendor yourself, contact the Market Manager Jackie Tapp at 613-476-1255.
