Stories of Downtown

That Special Touch: Owner, Darla Miller

When visiting the businesses of Downtown Belleville, you get to take in the beautiful facades of the storefronts, discover unique local and international products, and dine on delicious food.

You may catch a glimpse of the owner as they whiz by; the life of a small business owner is hectic—they want to engage with the customer, though they also must be the boss, the marketing expert, the cleaner, the server, the accountant, and that could all be before noon!

We wanted to give those business owners an opportunity to slow down for a moment and share their story. Behind each storefront are people who had a dream and put in a whole lot of work to make it come to life. These are some of the Stories of Downtown Belleville.

Darla Miller is the owner of That Special Touch, a high-end ladies’ boutique in Downtown Belleville, which has been a staple on Front Street for almost 30 years!

The boutique is known for its medium-to-high-end ladies wear and accessories and also Darla herself. She started out as a personal consultant and retail manager, eventually deciding to open her own store in Downtown Belleville due to her strong ties with the local business community.

Darla describes her customers as family, saying that after so many years in Downtown Belleville her clientele trust her and continue to come to her for trusted advice and the latest trends.

At That Special Touch you will find brands from all over the world–Turkey, Vancouver, Montreal, France and more. After recently moving to her new location at 267 Front Street, Darla has even more space to showcase her unique merchandise and eye-catching displays.

The new store has a vibrant atmosphere that invites you in and carries a variety of outfits for women. Can’t find something in store? Darla also provides personal shopping. It is truly your one-stop-shop for women’s fashion.

After many years in the Downtown District, Darla is still excited to be a part of the community. She looks forward to events and seeing the streets filled with families enjoying the beauty and fun of Downtown. When you visit the next downtown event make sure to stop by That Special Touch—if you’re lucky you may find Darla out front of her store with her famous popcorn machine!

Of course, before we left we asked our choice question: what are her favourite dining spots in the downtown area?

Darla, with a laugh and a wink, says “whoever reading this needs to come down and experience them all for themselves!”

It was a pleasure learning more about That Special Touch and Darla’s role in making Downtown Belleville a vibrant and welcoming place.
